Plant some paperwhites. It is a great way to affirm hope for a new year! Get 3 to 5 paperwhites, with a pot to fit them. Provide each resident with a plastic scoop or spoon. You put the initial layer of soil down, help them to place the bulbs in the pot, then each resident gets to add their bit of soil and voices their hope, dream or wish for the new year. It is a nice affirming ritual for the New Year, and they get to watch them grow and bloom which does not take long! Hopefully our hopes and dreams are growing and coming to fruition too! It is also a nice precourser to Spring in the midst of winter!
Spend a day on snow. Bring pans indoors and create tiny snowpeople, make snow ice cream ( use a snow cone machine on very fine grind rather than snow for this!), cut snowflakes out of paper, paint snow scenes on blue or black paper with white paint.
Snow Ball Soaps
Use water to moisten Ivory Snow Flakes to the consistency of a very stiff dough. Divide the dough into several bowls. You can add perfume and food coloring for variety. Shape large spoonfuls of the soap into balls. Place the balls on trays to harden for several days. If making to give children, include small plastic figure to be revealed when soap is used up. ( can coat the outside with a coating of whipped snow ...see below)
Crystal Snowflakes ***
We made beautiful crystal snowflakes. We started by counting 3 white pipe cleaners and twisting them together. Then we dipped them in a Borax soap solution overnight to "crystallize".
Whipped Soap Snowman
Empty two to three cups of Ivory Soap in a large bowl. gradually add just enough boiling water to soap to make it thick and creamy. Make a picture using the whipped soap.
A link to snow activities, may need modified, but some good ideas!
