I just looked at my calendar i avg 14 1/2 hour avtivities per day ..... it is a 32 bed unit and about 25 are in my morning activities and about 15-20 in my afternoon activities
I once did a consult in an Alz unit that was having trouble with people acting out. Activities had basically two groups. Morning and afternoon. Residents for each group were brought in in their w/c, then sat there through, typically, activities like music, trivia, exercise, etc. All were leader-intensive programs and the residents' participation was minimal.
After lunch, the morning group was put to bed, then pretty much the same thing happened in the afternoon. Not one person in either group was able to name the current activity. Nursing loved the "program", because it essentially meant no residents could bug them all day. After dinner, all Hell broke loose. Residents were assaulting one another, stealing from one another and getting into everything.
I suggested the programs be resident-based and that each resident only attend one or two activities each day, including 1-1 visits. Nursing refused to help gather residents, or much of anything else, but swing shift found remarkable changes in behavior and finally won over the day shift. Residents also seemed more alert when things were designed for them.
