A sensory box can be any related objects. A sea shore box could contain sand, seashells, piece of terrycloth (beach towel) cotton balls with "sea" scent oils or fragrant and if the resident can have it a piece of Salt Water Taffy. They are boxes that have different textures, smells, etc. that encourage residents remembering a pleasant experience. If you had a carpenter you wanted to do a one:one sensory with you could use pieces of wood, sanded, not sanded, nails, screws, sand paper, steel wool, tact cloth, oil to rub on the wood (with supervision). The list goes on, you can buy them but it's fun to make them as a group project (with higher functioning residents) and much cheaper, you can make individual sensory boxes for all your low functioning residents that nursing can give to them when Activities is not there and they are restless. Have fun creating!
