When my mother-in-law was in an "upscale" Altz. unit in an assisted living community, I became convinced the main reason for locating it there was that AL's have fewer regulations. Activities are expensive and, while a good marketing tool in the high-functioing, most of the Altz. patients don't appear to notice.

In my work in a long-term care facility, I have learned that activities may be the only thing in their lives with a demonstratable possitive impact on their life quality. Medicade has recognised that and gives a lot of weight to activities in certifying a NH, but Activities takes a back seat in those Altz. units on AL's.
