Over the years, I purchased dozens of differnet sorting "toys", but the best ones wer ones that brought back memories of the residents lives...and most of hose were free. I asked, at a meeting at my boating club, for everyone to give me their business card and explained what we would do with it. The project took on a life of its own. Not only did I get over 200 from my club members, some of the other boating clubs in the area put the request in their newsletters and I got well over 1000 business cards, from every sort of business.
I also had playing cards (different backs) shells, smooth stones, and assorted wooden cutout shapes. (Michael's-25 cents) A local card shop pitched in by donating a big box of discontinued greeting cards and a lumber yard saved scraps of all sorts of wood, which a volunteer sanded for us. A resident who was a stamp collector hooked us up with his club, which donated all sorts of their duplicate stamps and a bunch of post cards. A local yarn shop regularly donated discontinued yarns, which could not only be used for sorting, but for rolling into balls, and for one lady who could not remember her son's name could still knit caps.
