Glad to see you are challenging yourself. We in independent living need to think out of the box. Just because residents are living in our community should not change the interests. Plan an cruise, not a cruise week, I have taken IL residents on two cruises, and I and a staff member has gone for free, what about exercise, Tai Chi, Yoga, Muscle Toning, etc. Bulid a health and fitness group. We have a Slim Gym group of residents losing weight, have lost over 200 lbs in 10 months. How about a lecture series, the Forign Policy Association has an excellent eight week session begining in February, just visit the website. Bravo to the person who put the residents in charge of programs. 90% of my programs are planned and implmented by residents. They have a great deal of talent. Serve as their resouce. I also have an activity committee made up of 10 residents who plan the monthly calendar. Good Luck

: Since you are Independent Living you can try utilizing resident talents. I have several residents that facilitate activity programs.
: One gentleman does a trivial pursuit game, which is easily modified for several people. we play pinocle, bridge. we have a fireside chat which is facilitated by a resident, they discuss many things such as history of christmas and other holidays. I myself facilitate a Book Club. I get book club kits that are supplied by our local library, so you don't have to buy books.
: We also do a shopping trip once a month, lunch trips and dinner trips. We have a needlpoint group and every friday we hold a social hour. Hope this helps.
