: I'm interested in unusual ideas and materials/items that ya'll have used with diversional activity baskets for confused patients--- something besides the usual stuffed animals, laundry folding, etc.

Rocking chairs are very useful as they not only allow the jittery resident to "keep moving", but they can be used year round.

Sensory props used by my dept. are ladies pocketbooks containing lipstick, comb, small note pad & pencil, key & keychain, packet of tissues, unbreakable makeup mirror, wallet and /or change purse, possibly small bottles of perfume depending on safety issues at your facility. Just remember that lipstick & combs cannot be shared, so mark the handbags appropriately.

Baby dolls of a good size along with plastic bottles, diapers, baby lotion, baby clothes, rattles, infant keys, booties, baby blankets, etc.. work very well and often bring out mothering & occasionally fathering instincts.

Men enjoy going through a toolbox. Just remember to stay away from really sharp objects.

Any type of theme such as color or shape works well. Try all round one day. Include a ball, fresh cookies, cup, either fresh or plastic fruit, paper plates, etc... let the residents figure out the common denominator.

If you have a few veterans sometimes it is nice to have a "rations" kit available. This will bring much reminiscing. Consider also asking the army to visit the veterans and ask if they will share new ration kits with the residents.

Good luck with your project.
