: tell me about your hootenannies.

Hootenannies were sing alongs of the hippy generation. They were always aucustic and all sorts of folk music and protest songs were featured. There was usually an open mike period and it was always OK to sing along. For awhile there was even a weekly TV hootenanny live from a different University every time. Joan Baez, the New Christy Minstrals, Bob Dylan, The Kingston Trio and Peter Paul and Mary all started out as hootenanny artsits.

At the Veteran's home, we had occasional "hoots" when everyone who can brings a guitar, a harmonica or a pair of spoons and we sing our songs. A group that grew out of it called themselves The Band of Guitar Strummers, Banjo Pickers and Unclassified Merrimakers.
