I need the help of my fellow Activity Professionals (especially those
familiar with Ohio regs). I am finally employed at a wonderful facility
and have run into a problem I have never encountered before. A compliance officer
who has not only convinced our medical director that folding laundry is a
sterile procedure but that it is also against the regs. I know my rules and regs like the
back of my hand and in my entire career (8 yrs) the residents at my facilities prior to this
have always been encouraged to do task activities such as folding towels and wash clothes. She
has also got the doctor convinced that if we allow the residents to fold towels then
we also have to pay them. I need help proving that 1) this is not in the regs and 2) that the state
likes to see us giving the residents task activities and life skill type activities.
The residents are requesting to fold towels and wash cloths because it makes them feel like they are
helping and have a purpose. Several of these higher functioning residents will not
attend any other activities. But will fold towels and wash cloths. PLEASE HELP.
